Sookmyung Women’s University has been selected for 39 projects in the first round of the 2026 Individual Basic Research Program, administered by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation of Korea, securing a total of KRW 14 billion in research funding.

The program is a national research support initiative designed to foster creative and challenging basic research while promoting the growth of promising early-career researchers with outstanding capabilities.

Amid a roughly 25 percent increase in the total number of funding projects selected nationwide this year due to expanded government funding for basic research, Sookmyung achieved an increase of more than threefold compared with the previous year—far surpassing the national growth rate. The university’s secured research funding also rose by approximately 36 percent, from KRW 10.3 billion last year to KRW 14 billion this year. The results are seen as evidence of the university’s steadily strengthening research capacity.

Notably, 20 faculty members were selected for the Early-Career Research Program, a significant increase from the previous year, demonstrating the competitiveness of the university’s next generation of researchers.

In addition, five non-tenure-track faculty members and one researcher were also selected for the program, indicating that the university’s research base has expanded across the institution as a whole. This reflects the establishment of a robust research ecosystem designed to enable all researchers to fully exercise their creative potential.

President Moon Si-yeun stated, “These achievements are the result of the university’s systematic research support policies combined with the dedication of our faculty. We will continue to provide full support as we strive to become a research-centered university leading the advancement of basic science and future cutting-edge technologies.”
