International students enrolled in the College of Hallyu Studies at Sookmyung Women’s University experienced Korean traditional culture—including etiquette, traditional clothing, and tea ceremony—during a two-day, one-night cultural immersion program.
The College of Hallyu Studies participated in the “2026 Hi-Story Gyeongbuk Specialized Tourism Academy, First Cohort” program held for two days beginning April 3 at the Janggyehyang Cultural Experience and Education Center in Yeongyang County, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province. Supported by Sookmyung’s University Innovation Support Project, the program brought together 32 participants, including students, faculty, staff, and teaching assistants from the College of Hallyu Studies.
On the first day, participants took part in hands-on educational activities such as Korean traditional etiquette and attire instruction, tea ceremony experiences, and traditional food preparation. In particular, a program based on Eumsik Dimibang(飮食旨味方)—the first Korean-language cookbook, compiled around 1670 by Jang Gye-hyang, often referred to as a “virtuous woman among women(女中君子),” documenting the culinary practices of noble households—provided students with an opportunity to better understand Korea’s traditional food culture. On the second day, participants continued with instruction and experiential learning focused on Korean traditional alcohol.

Prof. Moon Hyung-nam, Dean of the College of Hallyu Studies, stated, “The purpose of this program is to help students experience Korean traditional culture firsthand, understand its value, and develop the ability to expand it into global content. We will continue to broaden experiential education programs connected to local communities in order to cultivate interdisciplinary talent who will lead the Korean Wave.”
Prof. Kim Kyung-ah, Chair of the School of Global Convergence Studies and the School of Hallyu International Studies within the College of Hallyu Studies, said, “Field-based experiences of traditional culture are an important educational method through which students internalize what they learn in the classroom. We will strengthen participatory educational programs to enhance both learning outcomes and student satisfaction.”
The College of Hallyu Studies is the first specialized academic college dedicated to Hallyu(Korean Wave), designed to cultivate globally competent talent grounded in Korean language, Korean culture, and Hallyu content. It focuses on fostering internationally competitive professionals through interdisciplinary education that systematizes Hallyu as an academic field and connects it to industry.
